The primary goal is to rehabilitate these severely endangered languages and dialects by incorporating them into an AI-powered digital environment.

A significant barrier is the scarcity of high-quality digital data. Written scriptures are frequently restricted or, in many orthographies, make dataset creation for LLM training challenging. Similarly, getting diverse and accurately transcribed audio data, which is required for speech recognition and generation, is difficult due to the limited number of speakers and outdated recording procedures.

Given the predicted requirement for bespoke model architectures or fine-tuning existing models based on model size and complexity, massive VM and GPU clusters are required.

This endeavour marks a milestone in language AI. It will pioneer strategies for low-resource language modelling.

An LLM could power translation tools, educational apps, language learning platforms, and conversational AI interfaces. This empowers Indigenous communities to participate fully in the AI-driven digital ecosystem.

While direct economic returns may be limited, the project encourages the creation of jobs in data annotation, linguistic expertise, software development, and content creation, allowing Indigenous individuals and businesses to participate in the larger Canadian economy and promote inclusivity and equity.
